Could there be more hours in a day, please? This is a question I ask myself at least once a week, and sometimes more. Every day is a balancing act. Up until recently, I didn't set aside time for my own marketing. I was too busy maintaining my own customers marketing needs that I couldn't find the time for my own.
Well, that last statement was simply an excuse. It wasn't that I couldn't find the time, I just wasn't making the time for my own marketing. I'm not the first small business owner that has a packed schedule, I needed to stop with the excuses. I was able to take care of twins and balance my daily schedule, so I knew there was a way to figure out the balance between work and my own marketing plan.
I remember the strict scheduling I had to stick by when my twins were newborns. I made sure that they both ate and slept at the same time. If one went off schedule, my day was shot.There was no way any laundry, cleaning or eating for myself was going to happen those days. It took time, but I figured out the right balance to get everything done, so both myself and my little ones were happy.
I started thinking about all that balancing and started comparing it to my work schedule. I mean come on, I was able to balance two newborns, and make dinner at the same time, I should be able to figure this out. It took some trial and error to figure out the best solution, but I now have a set schedule for my blog. It's not perfect every week, but I work hard to get it done because like my twins, people are counting on me to be consistent and remarkable. Here are a few tips that helped me balance my inbound marketing and customer work schedule:
- Assign a time in your day to work on your blog and stick to it. Life happens and you may not get to it on Monday, but be diligent and try hard to get it done on Tuesday.
- Set a goal for the number of blog posts you want to create each week. I aim for two per week. If I do more then I'm a rock star that week!
- Keep your phone or a notebook near by and write down blog ideas as they come. It will be so helpful to have a going list of ideas for future blog posts.
- Use a software that allows you to schedule your social media posts and tweets about your blog posts. I use HubSpot. It will save you a lot of time in promoting your blog.
I've found it refreshing to set specific times for my marketing. It makes you take a step back and reflect on why you do what you do. And let me tell you, if you haven't had twins, this balancing act is so much easier.
